Acoustiguide's Smartour application for smartphones gains popularity with fascinating projects and increasing numbers of users

一月 19 2011

In May 2010 Acoustiguide launched Smartour, our smartphone tour application.

Designed for the modern generation of museum goers, Acoustiguide’s Smartour allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to download interpretive content - for use either remotely or onsite - offering them a mobile media tour that can be taken before, during or after a museum visit, from anywhere and at any time.

Equally important, Smartour provides museums, galleries and tourist sites not only a platform to offer a richer, more engaging visit than before, but also a new way to reach, and attract new audiences. This engagement extends well beyond the onsite museum experience, creating a lasting relationship through in-app communication and social networking.

In the New Year, while we are preparing to launch our first Smartour apps for iPads and shortly after for Android, we would like to share with you some recent stories to highlight Smartour’s latest successful projects:

Presented this fall at the most prestigious exhibition space of Paris, this spectacular exhibition Monet la visite Exhibition at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, Paris (French app, download here; English, download here) retracts the sixty-year career of this major figure of impressionism. The accompanying app was created and produced in collaboration with the French Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN) and includes pictures of works as well as rich multi-layered audio commentaries enabling a profound look into Claude Monet’s contribution to the art of the 19th and 20th centuries, helps navigate in between works and includes practical information to help prepare one’s visit. At the Grand Palais, the tour is offered on Acoustiguide’s multimedia Opus players as well.

Available in English and in French, the app has been downloaded by thousands (!) of visitors until today!

The just-launched interactive tour of Australia’s Queensland Art Gallery – Australian Art Collection (download here) and a separate app for their 21st Century: Art in the First Decade special exhibition at GoMA (download here), the state’s premier visual arts institution and one of the leading art museums of Australia. “The Gallery’s driving philosophy”, says the museum brief for the app “is to connect art and people. And through endeavors such as this interactive tour, we hope to increase access to, and understanding of, the Gallery’s collection and special exhibitions”.

Another app takes users to Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace (download here) and offers a tour to the crown jewel of the Ottoman Empire. This tour application includes the Palace’s 4 courts and treasury rooms, with interactive map for easy navigation, multiple images, and fascinating audio content portraying key points of interest. More languages (including German, Japanese and Arabic) are coming soon.

These join Acoustiguide’s apps for San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (download here), the historic story of Mount Masada (here), and 11 apps in 10 languages for the gold award winning Australian tourist attraction Jenolan Caves, first 2 of which are already available: Jenolan Caves - Nettle Cave Tour (English, download here) and Jenolan Caves Kids Tour (download here), which will be soon followed by apps in 9 additional languages.

Nowadays, in the era of internet and smartphones, millions can download mobile media tours directly to their personal devices, from anywhere in the world, at any time. Moreover, as we have all learned to appreciate, a mobile media application is not only about rich engaging content, but offering a whole interactive and ongoing experience.

Our ongoing mission is to continue shaping Smartour to provide cultural institutions with a most advanced and attractive tool that gives friendly access to their treasures, and in addition, creates an interactive relationship with their visitors that extends far beyond the museum walls.
