(New York) - Opening on September 21, 2008 at the Museum of Modern Art, "Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night" is the first exhibition to explore the artist's fascination with the hours of sunset, dusk and nighttime. in exploring these themes, Van Gogh broke new ground by merging his devotion to nature with what he saw in his mind's eye. Acoustiguide has produced a short audio tour to complement the exhibition.
It features the curator of the exhibition, Joachim Pissaro, who suggests that nighttime was when Van Gogh was at his most creative "The guy lives at night. He's a night owl. He doesn't sleep until three or four in the morning - - writes, reads, drinks, goes to see friends, spends entire nights in cafes or brothels. Or outside, or meditates over the very rich associations that he sees in the night".
Jennifer Field, curatorial assistant and co-organizer of the exhibition, also provides insights into why the night was so important to Van Gogh. "He saw the night as a period of reflection and meditation after a day of activity. It was also this kind of metaphor for the cycle of life. And he linked this with the changing of the seasons".
In addition to Pissaro and Field, the tour also provides a more personal perspective from the artist himself. Listeners will hear a selection of Van Gogh's quotations that shed light onto his working process and his artistic struggles.
