The Museum of Modern Art and Acoustiguide Debut the World’s Largest Inclusive Audio Guiding Program
(New York City) – July 1, 2005 Acoustiguide and The Museum of Modern Art have launched the world’s largest inclusive audio guide service at MoMA, in New York City. The expanded audio guide programs are now offered free of charge to all of MoMA’s visitors, made possible by a generous sponsorship by Bloomberg.
MoMA Audio includes hours of audio interpretation on the Museum’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, all on one unit. The adult program, Modern Voices, features commentary on the highlights of the Museum’s collection, with extensive interviews of MoMA’s curatorial team. It is also available in five foreign languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and German. Modern Kids is for children ages 5-10 and their companions; and Visual Descriptions was designed for visitors who are visually impaired or those seeking a more in-depth looking experience. The audio program will be updated regularly with temporary exhibition tours and commentaries on the permanent collection.
Through its Web site at www.moma.org, the Museum also provides free audio files drawn from the MoMAudio program that can be downloaded onto MP-3 devices. The files are available in multiple locations on the Web site, including a special section devoted to MoMAudio, www.moma.org/momaudio.
“We are most grateful to Bloomberg for their sustained support of the Museum and its audience,” said Mr. Lowry. “Their sponsorship of the MoMAudio program will make it possible for more of our visitors to access the history, scholarship, and ideas behind many great works of art in our collection. We are also delighted to make audio commentary about our collection freely available in an MP-3 format, and look forward to expanding content in this area.”
Deborah Schwartz, The Edward John Noble Foundation Deputy Director for Education, said, “For many museum-goers, audio is the ideal format for learning about the collection and observing individual works more closely. We are delighted that everyone who comes to MoMA will now have the option to use our audio at no charge.”
Background
Acoustiguide has provided audio guides at MoMA for over thirty years, and the Museum has functioned as a launching pad for many of the creative and business innovations in the interpretation industry. A New York Times reporter, reviewing MoMA Audio in a recent article, called the tours “engaging…erudite….full of different perspectives.” New York Newsday’s reporter said, “….fortunately the museum has three new versions of an Acoustiguide tour for its permanent collection,” going on to call it, “the full monty: a jaunt loosely guided by a kaleidoscope of speakers,“ and concludes by saying that “with the Acoustiguide tour, art becomes an adventure.”
