Acoustiguide Opens Inclusive Audio Tours at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art

New York, NY - In August 2003, Acoustiguide unveiled  inclusive Family and Adult audio tours at the inauguration of the new Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Located in downtown New Orleans, it is the nation’s first museum dedicated to an exploration of the art and culture of the American South.  The Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, displays some of the region’s highest cultural achievements -- a visual equivalent to the literature and music for which the American South has long been known worldwide.  The Ogden Museum focuses on the 20th century, with artists represented from the Mississippi Delta to the urban centers of Atlanta and New Orleans.

Adult Tour

The Adult audio tour, which is distributed to every visitor, represents a range of voices from the South.  The principal guide is artist Benny Andrews, one of the South’s most important artists, born and raised in Plainview, Georgia.  It also features curator David Houston, from South Carolina, the Museum’s Director, Rick Gruber, from Louisville, Kentucky, as well as other living artists, such as Elemore Morgan Jr., Jeffrey Cook, and William Dunlap, their colleagues, and progeny. The tour also includes archival recordings of artists such as Eudora Welty.

The Museum’s current installation is arranged chronologically and thematically to reflect major trends in Southern art since 1890.  Unlike most traditional audio tours for permanent installations that focus solely on individual works, the Ogden’s tour provides an overview of each of the major galleries, and some of the signature works within them. The tours are delivered on state-of-the-art, MP3 Acoustiguide 2000 audio players.

Family Tour

Acoustiguide collaborated with the Ogden on the creation of two young characters, Elva Louise and Max, who will serve as spokeschildren for the Museum in the years to come.  Their images and words will be featured in an ambitious publishing and public programs scheme devised by the Ogden that will include special signage, events, curricula, and even kids books and multimedia.  Elva Louise and Max make their debut in the Acoustiguide tour, which helped transform a mere concept into three-dimensional talking characters with fully developed backgrounds and personalities.  Acoustiguide and the Ogden cast children from a local theatre troupe to give the tour an authentic regional sound. Young listeners identify stops on the tour that were produced for them with icons of the two children.
