Building the New MoMA Digital Guide Launched at the Museum of Modern Art
(New York) - Building the New MoMA, a multi-media guide, debuted January 26, 2005 at the Museum of Modern Art. With generous support and software application by IBM and content design, scripting, and integration by Acoustiguide and MoMA, the Museum’s first foray into handheld multi-media interpretation offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the decisions that shape the new museum, emphasizing its historic evolution and its relationship to its midtown location.
Through a combination of still images, slide shows, archival film footage, audio soundscapes, animation, and recent video, the Digital Guide helps the visitor make sense of the new space. Users learn about the selection of architect Yoshio Taniguchi, for example, and the way his concept is translated into scale, materials, light, and proportion. Tour takers meet key decision makers including Glen Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art; Yoshio Taniguchi, lead architect; and Terence Riley, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design.
The screen-based, portable device caters to visitors with different learning styles, providing both audio and visual facts that contribute to telling the building’s story. The Digital Guide directs visitors to eight locations of architectural significance specifically selected to represent different aspects of the Museum’s design and evolution. Included are the famous Bauhaus stairs where visitors learn how elements of the original building are absorbed into Taniguchi’s vision. Each of the eight locations offers different pathways into exploring the building’s design. Topics include: The Architect, History of MoMA, Construction, Architecture, and Art/Collection.
Deborah Schwartz, Director of Education, states “Having worked with Acoustiguide for more than twenty years, the Museum trusted their ability to develop the content for this latest form of mobile interpretation. The Acoustiguide script anchors the multi-media guide in a simple, clear narrative that is, at the same time, full of ideas, information and nuance. Acoustiguide’s understanding of the visitor experience and site-specific content framed our decisions about how and where to present audio-visual content.”
As of January 26, the Digital Guide is available to the public free of charge for a period of three months. During this period, a limited number of devices will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at a distribution desk on the Museum's third floor.
